Marsciano - Cantina Castello Monte Vibiano Vecchio
Description:
The company Castello Monte Vibiano Vecchio is located in Marsciano, few kilometers away from Perugia, along the ancient royal path to Rome. Marsciano, a long time ago a significant castle in the territory of Perugia, is today one of the most vibrant productive downtowns in the valley.
Monte Vibiano Vecchio castle is the main and most famous building of Monte Vibiano Vecchio village. This outstanding structure, dated back 1st century A.C., overlooks the whole Mercatello valley, not far away from Marsciano. This building has undergone a great deal of maintenance intervention over the centuries, which has been essential in order to preserve its original charm.
The castle is the main office of Fasola Bologna family’s company which extends all over the Umbrian hills around for about 500 hectares long.
Andrea Fasola Bologna stopped the production of the wine in 1992, even if keeping the vineyards intact; then in 1998, together with his son Lorenzo, he began a production project which retrieved the well-established family tradition aiming at the production of wines and oils capable of standing out in the current winemaking scene.
The new winery of Castello Monte Vibiano Vecchio inaugurated its activities with the 2003 grape harvesting, entrusted to the management of two wine experts: Attilio Pagli e Valentino Ciarla. They vinify the grapes coming from more than 40 hectares, all planted with wines. The yearly production is about 250 thousands bottles.
The vineyards are planted primarily hilltop and, on these, red grapes are cultivated preponderantly: ahead is the Sangiovese grape, then with lower shares are the cabernet, the merlot, the sagrantino e the Syrah.
White grapes varieties are not disregarded however: even if white grapes are cultivated to a small degree, they do include two local native grape varieties and that is to say the Trebbiano and the Grechetto, and a small part of the Sauvignon Blanc.
The company Castello Monte Vibiano Vecchio also specializes in the production of olive oil: since its establishment this activity has never been interrupted. The olive groves, which cover 50 hectares, rise in the same hills of the vineyards with a favourable environment thanks to its climatic and agronomic conditions. It’s here that a very appreciated extravergine olive oil originates: it is offered in the first and business classes of the most important airlines all over the world.
In 2009 the company Castello Monte Vibiano Vecchio has received a certificate of environmental quality and sustainability (ISO 14064) for the CO2 emission reduction from DNV (Det Norske Veritas).
