Torgiano - Museo dell Olivo e dell Olio

Photogallery:

Description:

The Olive and Oil Museum was created by Giorgio and Maria Grazia Marchetti Lungarotti to document the presence of oil in daily life over the millenia: an excellent food, indispensible source of light and heat, recurring element in the magical-religious rites of the Mediterranean cultures, olive oil is an economic product with great commercial value and has been prized since antiquity. The tree was domesticated in ancient times and has acquired a sacredness due to its peculiarities, expressing at the same time an essential aspect of the landscape.

The museum covers ten rooms: technical equipment for olive cultivation and oil production, archeological artifacts, artistic objects and countless documents demonstrate the different uses of oil in history. A section is dedicated to the mythological origins of the olive tree, which according to legend was given to man by the goddess Athena. It also displays many precious examples of oil lamps from the 8th century B.C. to the Neoclassical age.
